A BRIEF HISTORY OF COLD LASER THERAPY
"COLD LASER" THERAPY
The study of "Cold LASERs", operating at an average power under 500 milliwatts, started in the mid 60's. Their photobioactivation produces low temperature or non thermal reactions. Their use started around 1980 in the USA. Their application is spreading rapidly all over the world in human and equine medicine. They are increasingly popular for the treatment of scars, allergies, and pain, as related in "Low Level LASERTHERAPY, A Practical Introduction", by T. Oshiro and R.G. Calderhead, a 1988 Wiley Medical Publication. There are several other veterinary applications of "Cold LASERs" described in the literature, e.g., "Equine Injury & Therapy", by Mary W. Bromiley, MCSP, SRP, RPT, (USA), Chartered Physiotherapist. And "Therapeutic Lasers Theory and Practice" by G. David Baxter is another good reference.
The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The "Cold LASER" uses a de-focused beam to spread the light energy over a broader area. This allows a much larger area to be treated. The THERALASER T2000 Super Pulsed Laser uses seven LASER diodes to give a flashlight size beam of healing energy (approx. 2 inches diameter). This is a much greater treatment area than other devices which offer 1 to 4 LASER diodes and require much more treatment time to be as effective as the THERALASER T2000 Super Pulsed Laser.
